Shoreland Protection Program

5-Year Project Focus:
Reduce runoff from shoreland

When much of the shoreland around a lake becomes developed with houses, garages, outbuildings, patios, walkways, and driveways, the resulting runoff increase adds nutrients to the lake. Restoring the shoreland to its more natural state and introducing practices that absorb runoff before it enters the lake help preserve lake clarity, wildlife habitat, and the natural beauty.

Through State grant funds, the District started a 5-Year Lake Protection Action Plan in 2010 and offers a cost sharing plan to introduce shoreland protection landscaping practices that minimize runoff to the lakes. Examples are rain gardens, rain barrels and replacing turf grass with native plants. A tree-fall program to enhance habitat in the near-shore waters is also included.

The cost sharing programs consist of the following options:
  1. Technical Assistance
The District offers shoreland owners the opportunity to discuss drainage and runoff concerns with a professional at no cost and with no commitment required to take further action. Following this "Quick Assessment", if the owner would like to consider a cost sharing water quality project, they can sign up for a design meeting. At this meeting, the consultant will measure and photograph the property, discuss possible designs, and determine what kind of installation meets the owner's needs at the level of commitment they want. The consultant will then prepare a plan for the project and information on participating in the District cost-matching program. The cost to the owner for the design meeting and plan is $25.
